—W. Younger 1847 Washing Machine Patent Model

William Younger of Huntington Tennessee had the unusual idea to use a wheelbarrow as the place for his invention, a washing machine, so the machine could easily be moved around. In 1847, he was among the first to patent a washing machine and his patent was issued on November 6th, and the number 5353 was assigned to his invention. The patent papers describe the function of his washing machine in part as, “what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is - The combination with the driving roller A, of the toothed roller C, fluted roller B, and rubbing board E; the board E, rubbing the clothing, and the rollers B and C, pressing upon and changing the position of the clothing as they are revolved, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.” read more>>
